2 min read In an exhilarating celebration of unity and advocacy, the 15th annual Mr Gay World Competition recently concluded in Cape Town, South Africa, crowning mental health advocate Troy Michael Smith from Guam as Mr Gay World 2023.

Puerto Rico’s José Lopez was crowned Mr Gay World 2022  on Sunday, while second runner-up, Germany’s Max Appenroth, made history as the first trans finalist in the pageant. Tony Ardolino from the United States of America was named as  first runner up. Thirty-two year-old Lopez in a statement posted to social media after his win, said winning the title was an opportunity to be a “spokesperson and an ambassador” for the LGBTQI community.

The former Mr. Gay World has been served with a gag order over statements he’s made about the competition.Pageant organizers have slapped former Mr. Gay World winner Louw Breytenbach with a public gag order after he made statements regarding his short tenure as titleholder.The situation began in 2021 when Breytenbach, a former Mr.

Mr Gay World Foundation has sued former winner Louw Breytenbach, asking him and his publicist to “retract and apologise” for allegedly defamatory comments they made last year. South African human rights activist and TV presenter Breytenbach, was the winner of the Mr Gay World 2021 title, but resigned two months into his reign citing “value differences”. In a statement released to local media Breytenbach’s lawyer Quintin Steyn confirmed the legal action launched by the organisation.   A post shared by Louw Breytenbach (@louwbreytenbach02)Breytenbach told The Citizen that he had participated in the competition not for the title, but to use the platform to be a voice for the LGBTQI community. “There are real problems out there and we, as winners, need to get our hands dirty and work. My reason for resigning was never to tarnish the reputation of the organisation, but rather because of value differences,” Breytenbach said. Steyn revealed that he had submitted a supplementary affidavit on behalf of both Breytenbach and Prins.  A post shared by Louw Breytenbach (@louwbreytenbach02)Breytenbach had detailed his disagreements with the Foundation when he resigned as Mr Gay World in 2021, after refusing to sign a contract which said that the organisation would be his exclusive agent. Breytenbach at the time said that he already had an agent to manage his TV and acting gigs.

2 min read Mr Gay World 2022 will take place in Cape Town, South Africa from 9 to 16 October 2022. In the wake of the lifting of international Covid-19 restrictions, this will be the first time in three years that Mr Gay World will be presented as an in-person event.

The Citizen reports.Breytenbach had refused to sign the “unconstitutional and opaque” contract sent to him after the pageant, citing issues with media representation and renumeration.The contract allegedly required Mr. Gay World to be Breytenbach’s sole agent for TV bookings and acting roles, which Breytenbach objected to, given he already retains an agent.“I don’t need them to manage whatever TV opportunities I get,” he sad.

Bharat Mahajan, a 28-year-old mental health services manager working on the frontlines of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, was on Sunday crowned Mr Gay New Zealand 2021.The winner of Mr Gay New Zealand will have the chance to represent the country at the Mr Gay World competiton that is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg later this year.Mahajan from the town of Thames was judged the winner at the Ending HIV Big Gay Out event, just hours before Auckland went into a level three lockdown on Sunday night.  The health worker was back at work the next day at the frontlines as the city dealt with a new Coronavirus outbreak.

South Africa’s largest city Johannesburg has been chosen to host two editions of Mr Gay World – the posponed 2020 and the 2021 events. The double bill event will be held from March 21  to March 28, 2021.
