M(h)aol – pronounced ‘male’, translating to English as ‘bald’ – are not a band who leave you wondering what their lyrics are about. Staring down misogyny head on, vocalist Róisín Nic Ghearailt delivers her blunt lyrics over the buzzing, unnerving post-punk backing of Constance Keane (aka Fears), Jamie Hyland (who engineered and lent his name to Girl Band’s debut album ‘Holding Hands With Jamie’), Zoe Greenway and Sean Nolan. The band are set to release their debut EP, ‘Gender Studies’, later this month and recently put live its barbed title track.“‘Gender Studies’ weaves past and present in an exploration of how the construct of gender shapes our lives”, says Ghearailt.
