Westminster Council for the first time ever, setting in train Hamza's path to the Queen's Jubilee celebrations. Just after the election, the new Labour council leader, Adam Hug, approached him and asked "Do you want to be Lord Mayor?’" The ceremonial role, which lasts a year, has been held by peers, a former president of the Law Society, and Dame Shirley Porter over its history. Labour wanted the role to go to a symbol of modern Westminster, Hamza, who once featured in a Stormzy music video, and is the council's first Muslim to hold the post, seemed a perfect fit.
