It is crucial to store food correctly to maintain its freshness and save money, yet many don't realise they're making a mistake with bananas.

Emma Mason, a culinary expert and founder of Kitchen Mason, has issued a warning about the common misstep. She explained: "Don't store bananas with your other fruits as they'll ripen more quickly (unless you have under-ripe fruit, then go ahead)." Bananas emit ethylene gas from their stems, which accelerates the ripening process — great for making them softer with more flavour.

However, this can lead to premature spoilage when bananas are placed near too much other fruit. Emma advises against keeping bananas in a common fruit bowl if they're yellow, as the ethylene will hasten decay.

For green bananas, proximity to other fruits can aid in ripening them, but ripe bananas are best kept separate to prevent them from turning brown or mushy.
