The 67-year-old actor opened up in a new profile piece for The New York Times, revealing that he stepped up for Emma for a scene that he wasn’t even in. Keep reading to find out more… During the filming of a particular shot, it was revealed that Willem wasn’t even scheduled to be on set, but he arrived to help his co-stars prepare for their scenes.
While working with Emma on the sidelines, he was willing and open to let her slap him as many times as she wanted to get into character, which is something she appreciated. “There’s this instinct to perform that many actors have — the ‘look at me, look at me!’ kind of performer,” Emma shared in the profile. “He’s the opposite of that.” Emma also thought that Willem‘s willingness to be slapped for a scene he wasn’t even part of, was a sign of times gone by. “Maybe it’s changed through the years,” she shared. “A lot of actors I bond with have been doing this for a long time, and you know they’ve gone from ‘I’ to ‘We.’” Director Yorgos Lanthimos added that his commitment to the role was exactly what he wants and looks for in his stars: “That’s what you want from actors.
