Ferguson came close to signing an 18-year-old Varane from French club Lens in 2011 only to be thwarted by Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.
Varane has enjoyed a stellar career with Real, winning four Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey, but it could have been very different had then-sporting director Zidane not taken him to the Spanish capital as a teenager.
United were desperate to sign a centre-back in the summer of 2011 and ended up going for Blackburn’s Phil Jones in a £16.5million deal - only after Varane’s €10m move to Real.
