A police officer in West Virginia who was shot in the face Tuesday while responding to a traffic complaint died Thursday evening, Charleston city officials announced, according to a report.

Charleston police Officer Cassie Johnson, 28, had been removed from life support Wednesday after it was determined she was not expected to recover from her wounds.

Her organs will be donated, officials said. "To say we are heartbroken is an understatement," Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said Thursday, according to the Charleston Gazette-Mail.
