He would have hated every second of it, of course. And not just the result. As completely deserved and as utterly heartfelt as this enormous outpouring of grief and emotion most surely was, Walter Smith simply wouldn’t have appreciated all the fuss.

He was never less comfortable than when he was shoved out there reluctantly into the centre of everyone’s attention with a wearisome roll of those hangdog eyes.But when the ball finally began to roll at Ibrox last night after such a touching, tear-stained tribute was paid to one of the greatest of all time – and he’d have recoiled uncomfortably at being afforded such a lofty status too, by the way – Smith would have been right back in his element.
