US actor Robert Blake, who was acquitted of wife's murder, dies

In Cold Blood actor Robert Blake, who was tried and acquitted of the murder of his wife, has died. Robert died at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family members, according to a statement released to CNN by his niece, Noreen Austin.

He was 89 years old. Born Michael James Gubitos on September 18, 1933 to an Italian immigrant father and an Italian-American mother, Blake started in showbiz from the age of five when he was cast in "Our Gang".

He appeared in the series for five years and changed his name to Bobby Blake. Robert had a longstanding career in acting, with almost 60 years of acting work under his belt.

His breakout role is considered his portrayal of detective Tony Baretta in TV cop series Baretta which aired between 1975 and 1978 However, this sadly came to an end in 1997, with his last role being the Mystery Man in David Lynch's film Lost Highway.
