Triggers of perimenopause symptoms revealed from stress at work to fatty foods

Transitioning through menopause can be a confusing and uncomfortable time for many woman - especially navigating through the sudden mood swings and hot flushes.There are around three million women currently going through peri-menopause in the UK, and symptoms usually start between the ages of 45 and 55 years.

Symptoms during these years are brought on by changing levels of hormones produced by the ovaries, mainly oestrogen. But health experts have warned that women are unaware of the way mental health, lifestyle, and diet choices can trigger the severity of their perimenopause symptoms.

Research conducted by Health & Her, with more than 55,000 women, found that 80 percent of participants going through perimenopause reported at least one trigger leading to symptoms - with stress at work, caffeine and stressful events being the top three most common.

Dr Rebeccah Tomlinson, GP menopause specialist at Health & Her comments: “It’s not surprising to me that stress features twice in the top three and is a major cause of amplifying symptoms felt by women during this time. “Stress is a natural physical and psychological reaction to life experiences.
