Goalkeeper Trevor Carson admits it’s tough to accept he was hours away from netting a life-changing move to join the Hoops. But after later spending 18 painful months on the sidelines at Motherwell, he’s learned to accept what’s in the past and focus on the present as he aims to savour tonight’s Scottish Cup clash at Celtic Park. The St Mirren number one was almost picked up by Brendan Rodgers’ in-form side when Craig Gordon picked up a serious injury back in January, 2018.The Steelmen turned the Glasgow club’s approach down, deeming them to have not met their own valuation of the Northern Ireland international, with the Hoops eventually signing Scott Bain from Dundee as a replacement. Now 34, Carson has had to come to terms with the fact his chance of earning a mega money move may well have passed him by.But having had to endure months of being out of action on the treatment table, he’s philosophical about his career and determined to take in every experience he has left on the pitch - including this evening’s mouth-watering Scottish Cup tie.Carson explained to Renfrewshire Live Sport: “I made a joke in the press the week after it all fell through that my partner and I played a game of ‘Let’s see what we could have bought’.“It was Robbo [Stephen Robinson] who stopped me going to Celtic and we still joke about it now.

He winds me up, saying, ‘It wasn’t the right move for you.’ I’m like, ‘Aye, tell my bank balance that!’“We can laugh about it now but it was a tough time for me personally.

At one point the deal was done, but it fell through because of something stupid like Motherwell were in for the boy Freddy Woodman from Newcastle.
