Tory minister held Christmas bash as millions faced Covid festive gathering ban

Former UK Education Secretary Gavin Williamson threw a party for up to two dozen staff members last year as millions prepared to face the prospect of Christmas alone.

The Daily Mirror reports that Williamson - who was sacked from the education job in a September reshuffle - gathered his departmental staff in the Department for Education (DfE) cafe for "drinks and canapes" on December 10.

Williamson delivered a short speech at the evening event before officials and ministers knocked back glasses of wine at the shindig, which Whitehall bosses now admit should not have gone ahead.
