Manchester City’s game against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup third round in September was a routine victory for the Blues, but the clash had greater importance for a young Liam Delap.
To open the scoring on that occasion, Phil Foden sent a perfectly-weighted ball beyond the Cherries defence and Delap latched onto the pass before instinctively striking home into the top right corner.
It was a moment of outstanding quality from the 18-year-old forward, and the effort was made sweeter by Delap marking his senior debut with a goal, making him the youngest debutant scorer at City in seven years.
Mark Sellers was Delap's Head of PE for his time spent at Ecclesbourne School in Derby for his secondary education and has revealed to the Manchester Evening News how he felt watching his former pupil score such an excellent goal on his debut. "I thought he was going to take an extra touch and go around the keeper, I didn’t expect him to ping it and hit the ball into the top corner," Sellers said. "There’s a colleague of mine that taught Liam for a few years as well and he messaged me straight away. "He asked if I had seen it, and I was like 'oh mate, that is just magic'.
