The price of crossing the Warburton Toll Bridge is to go up for the first time in 161 years. The historic bridge crosses the Manchester Ship Canal between the village of Warburton in Trafford and Rixton in Warrington.
The current toll rate of 12p was set by an Act of Parliament in 1863 and hasn't changed since. But it is now set to increase by over 700 percent to £1 after it has undergone a £6.5m upgrade.
The "modernisation" work is set to begin on Tuesday, October 22 with tolls for all road users being suspended from Monday, September, 30.
