Billy Stark is too long in the tooth to get overexcited about too much in football but when a kid leapfrogs his Scotland Under-19 team because he’s too good for it, his pulse quickens. And when he sees two different kids commanding starting slots in the full team when they could still be turning out for the 21s, the veteran coach really does believe that something special is happening in Scotland.Aberdeen ’s 18-year-old right-back Calvin Ramsay is the player Stark can’t pick for the U19s because Scot Gemmill’s U21s want him.

At 20, that duo can be mainstays for a decade and a bit to come. Both products of the SFA’s performance school system – as is Ramsay – with Chelsea ’s Gilmour and Everton’s new £10m man Patterson also coming through the Rangers youth programme, Stark has no doubt they are in the vanguard of what could be a golden generation.
