The View‘s Hot Topics segment often gets personal, as the cohosts routinely share how a particular issue impacts their lives, but a discussion today hit a little too close to home for cohost Sunny Hostin.

Immediately following a segment about American Heart Month with guest cohost and American Heart Association national volunteer Star Jones, Hostin apparently was scheduled to ask the next question when moderator Whoopi Goldberg, hearing something from a producer in her earpiece, pointed to a slightly rattled cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin and said, “Are you doing?” At that point, the camera caught a teary-eyed Hostin and she said, “I’m sorry, my aunt died yesterday of a heart attack.” She then asked Griffin, “So can you take my question?” The news seemed to surprise the other cohosts, who immediately offered words of comfort before quickly moving to a discussion of Jones’ gig hosting Divorce Court.

Jones was explaining her role on the show when she returned to Hostin. “My job is to be empathetic to the people at Divorce Court, the litigants that come before me, to let them know they’re not alone in their relationship drama or trauma, and that somebody is there for you to help you get through it,” Jones said. “And so this may be the silliest transition I’ve ever made on television, but understand that your aunt is at home with her God, and we are here for her to fulfill her legacy.” When Hostin again apologized for disrupting the show, Jones said, “We’re your girls.

You’re supposed to be vulnerable with your girls.” By providing your information, you agree to our Terms of Use and our Privacy Policy.
