St Mirren footballer Shaun Rooney has been charged with assaulting a woman in Glasgow city centre.The 28-year-old was also charged with a breach of the peace at a takeaway shop in Queen Street in the early hours of Thursday, September 9.The news comes after the club said he had been suspended after he disclosed his involvement in an alleged incident that is said to have taken place last week.The former St Johnstone and Inverness Caledonian Thistle ace returned to Scotland in the summer after spending time at Fleetwood Town in England - where he played under manager, former Celtic captain Scott Brown.The Scot, who is understood to be dating tennis player Heather Watson, has made ten appearances for the Paisley side this season, and netted on his debut in the Europa Conference League qualifier against Icelandic cracks Valur.Back in May, Rooney sealed his return to the Premiership by penning a two-year deal with St Mirren.

Tennic ace Watson was unable to make the trip north to Paisley because of her commitments at the Paris Olympics, reaching the quarter finals of the women's doubles with partner Katie Boulder before losing out to Italian duo Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in straight sets.But speaking to the BBC after her quarter final defeat, Watson, 32, said Rooney had messaged her after her match.

She said: "He just text me to say that he watched us and we played great. I love, love, love watching him play."If we didn't get through in our doubles yesterday I was gonna go there and watch his game tonight.
