St Andrews to remove Swilcan Bridge stonework after fury surrounding iconic golf landmark
dailyrecord.co.ukSt Andrew's Links Trust have confirmed that the controversial stonework at the famous golf course is to be removed.The stonework has been introduced at each side of the iconic bridge - where the Open and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship are held - that connects the tee with the fairway on the closing hole of the Old Course.
It's been widely criticised on social media with golf fans and players sharing their displeasure at the work. No work has been undertaken to the Swilcan Bridge itself but surrounded the turf areas on the approach to the famous spot.
It's now been announced that a decision to remove the work has been taken. A spokesperson for St Andrews Links Trust had said: "For the avoidance of doubt, we can categorically state that no works have been undertaken to the bridge itself.
The ongoing works are solely focussed on the turfed approach area to the bridge, which regularly falls into disrepair due to the significant foot traffic by tens of thousands of golfers and countless other visitors seeking to have their photograph taken at the landmark "In order to avoid having to close the bridge to foot traffic during certain periods of the year, a number of solutions have been attempted previously.
