A record-high number of LGBTQI characters were seen in regular and recurring roles on US TV in 2021-2022, a new report from GLAAD has revealed.GLAAD’s Where We Are on TV report analysed primetime scripted series regulars and recurring characters on broadcast networks, cable networks and streaming services for the 2021-2022 TV season.“The growing state of LGBTQ representation on television is a signal that Hollywood is truly starting to recognize the power of telling LGBTQ stories that audiences around the world connect with,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement. GLAAD said that while there were series with multiple LGBTQI characters like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, All American, Legends of Tomorrow, Station 19, Grey’s Anatomy, Batwoman and Sex Education, there was no primetime broadcast series with majority LGBTQI characters.Stills from Pose (left) & Sex Education (right).GLAAD recorded 637 LGBTQ characters on these platforms. Streaming services led the list with 358 LGBTQ characters, which included 245 LGBTQ series regulars and 113 LGBTQ recurring characters. There were 141 LGBTQI characters on scripted broadcast primetime programming, including 92 regular and 49 recurring characters.

50 Cent (aka Curtis Jackson) is set to make his move into superhero cinema, with the rapper-come-media mogul signing on to produce at least one film based on DC’s Xerø comics.Deadline reports that Jackson will steer the project through his production company, G-Unit Film & Television, in tandem with Color Farm Media’s Erika Alexander and Ben Arnon. Xerø creator Christopher Priest is also linked to the project, with Joseph Illidge – CEO of production and publishing company Illuminous – rounding out the production team. Notable is that the Xerø film will be a wholly independent production, with neither DC nor WarnerMedia involved in the project.

Squid Game actress Kim Joo-ryoung has shared her experience working on the hit Netflix series with director Hwang Dong-hyuk.During her interview with OSEN, the star revealed that she had been personally contacted by Hwang instead of going through a standard audition process for her role as Han Mi-nyeo on the show.The actress explained that she had previously worked with the Squid Game director on a 2011 film called Silenced, and then again in 2019 on the set of Collectors, which was subsequently released in 2020.Kim then added that Hwang had told her he had enjoyed her performance on the South Korean television series SKY Castle, and propositioned a role on Squid Game, which was still in its early stages of production.“He said he’d contact

Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk had spoken about how audiences are starting to open up to the idea of watching shows in other languages.In a recent interview with IndieWire, Hwang shared how streaming services like Netflix have made it easier for foreign-language filmmakers to release their work internationally. He compared this to “older media”, such as theatres and television, which had a lot more “barriers”.“Before, with older media, when one country’s filmmaker wanted to go to bring their film to another country, there were a lot of barriers with time and language,” Hwang said.
