Those who use the train for long journeys might be missing out on savings which can be made by 'splitting' their tickets. When travelling by train, splitting the journey - or 'split ticketing' - can often save money, particularly on longer routes.

Instead of buying one single ticket, travellers can buy multiple tickets to cover the component parts. For example, if you were to travel from Edinburgh to Oban on the morning of February 8 you could reduce your ticket by £6.60 through splitting, according to Trainline.

Instead of booking direct to Oban, you would instead book an off-peak leaving from Edinburgh at 11.15 to Queen Street and then an any-time ticket from Glasgow Queen Street at 12.22 to Oban.It would cost you £42.20, as opposed to the £48.80 that it would cost if you bought a direct ticket, and will take four hours and 12 minutes in total - including a 15 minute layover at Queen Street.Reena Sewraz, Which?
