Nick Vivarelli International CorrespondentChiara Bellosi, whose first work, “Ordinary Justice,” launched from Berlin’s Generation 14plus section in 2020, is back with “Swing Ride” (“Calcinculo”) about an overweight 15-year-old named Benedetta pining for attention in an Italian province where she falls in love with the skinny non-binary Amanda.A key difference between the two films is that while “Ordinary Justice,” which examined the lives of two families on opposite sides of a murder case, originated from a deeply researched screenplay that Bellosi wrote, “Swing Ride” — premiering in Panorama on Feb. 13 — stems from a prizewinning script proposed to her by Carlo Cresto Dina, her producer, who also discovered Alice Rohrwacher (“Happy as Lazzaro”) and is known for nurturing the cream of Italy’s new cinematic crop.   “It’s a very different process; it was the first time that I had to start from a world that didn’t germinate from me,” said Bellosi about working from the script penned by Maria Teresa Venditti and Luca De Bei that won Italy’s prestigious Solinas prize in 2018.It was like moving into a new house that she had to make her own, she said.“I worked with the writers; I wanted to make a few tweaks and we did that together,” she added, noting that initially “it was a leap into the void.” But directing from their screenplay actually ended up giving her “more freedom” than her previous pic because “the container is already there; but you can go pretty wild with the rest.”This freedom also made it more fun.

It is a role that could not be more dissimilar to the fictional megalomaniac billionaire Peter Isherwell, whom Rylance plays in McKay’s disaster movie.Written and directed by Graham Moore, the Oscar-winning scribe behind “The Imitation Game,” “The Outfit” sees Rylance star as a Savile Row tailor who has fled across the Atlantic to escape his tragic past.

Leo Barraclough International Features EditorAhead of Sunday’s world premiere of documentary “1341 Frames of Love and War,” which plays in Berlinale Special, Variety spoke to Israeli writer/director Ran Tal about the film and its subject, Israeli war photographer Micha Bar-Am.In some ways “Frames” continues Tal’s interest in Israeli history evident in his previous work, “What If? Ehud Barak on War and Peace,” which centered on the former prime minister of Israel. Bar-Am was born in Berlin in 1930, but grew up in what became Israel, and across a five decade-long career as a photographer he documented many of the major episodes – in particular the wars – in the life of the young country, founded in 1948.

Michael Gandolfini has arrived. The 22-year-old son of James Gandolfini took on the role of his lifetime in The Many Saints of Newark, the upcoming feature film (and prequel to The Sopranos.) For Michael, playing a young version of Tony Soprano, the character his father made famous on the HBO series, was no easy task. “The pressure is real,” he told The New York Times. “There’s fear. But the second layer, that a lot of people don’t think about, which was actually harder, is to play Tony Soprano.” He added that with the role “not only was it the feeling of my dad — it was like, Tony Soprano is a [expletive] hard character.”

“The Sopranos” earned her countless awards, was supposed to open the upcoming prequel movie, “The Many Saints of Newark,” which debuts on HBO and in theaters Oct. 1.“We had Edie come in and she dressed up as Carmela and we shot something with her and it wound up not being in the final movie,” the film’s director, Alan Taylor, told NME.Taylor went on to say “there was some confusion” about how the film should start.

IT was one of the most revolutionary TV shows of the last century.  Over eight years and six series, The Sopranos enthralled viewers as it followed the fortunes of the New Jersey Soprano family and their mobster dad Tony.  Doling out violence and comedy in equal measures, the show began with mob boss Tony, played by James Gandolfini, going to therapy to help deal with his controlling mum.

creator David Chase said he ended the series with the Journey song “Don’t Stop Believin'” simply because the show’s production crew despised the catchy earworm.On the “WTF With Marc Maron” podcast on Monday, Chase shared how he first told them about his plan for James Gandolfini’s character, Tony Soprano, to close the series with a jukebox tune.“I said, ‘Listen, I’m going to talk about three songs that I am thinking about for ending the show,’” he recalled telling them. Those three tunes were Al Green’s “Love and Happiness,” another track that has since slipped from Chase’s mind, and the Journey song.

Tony Soprano may or may not be dead, but unfortunately James Gandolfini is, so to continue The Sopranos saga, creator David Chase has flipped back the calendar to craft something of an origins story for America’s favorite crime family in The Many Saints Of Newark. Set for domestic release while wedded to a simultaneous HBO Max bow on October 1, the Warner Bros/New Line film has its world premiere on September 22 at the Tribeca Fall Preview at New York’s Beacon Theater.
