It opened Friday on Virtual Cinema.Founded in 1969 by Detroit headshop mogul Barry Kramer, fans and stars alike soon pushed its circulation to more than 200,000 probably because it lacked the pretension of rival Rolling Stone.REM’s Michael Stipe loved the magazine because it spoke directly to its readers looking for the 411 on Kiss, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop and dozens more stars from the rock pantheon.Among the doc’s colourful anecdotes:– Kramer once dumped a can of trash over proto punker Iggy Pop’s head.– Joan Jett showed up at the mag’s Motown offices threatening to pummel the critic who lambasted the Runaways’ first album.– The mag also published future.
