Scottish Cup: Motherwell star says his side must make sure they're not a 'giant-killing'

Blair Spittal says it’s important for Motherwell to show character at Raith Rovers on Saturday to avoid a Scottish Cup upset.The Steelmen travel to Stark’s Park to take on Ian Murray’s side in the fifth round of the competition, hoping not to be on the receiving end of a giant-killing act.Steven Hammell’s side are on a run of 11 Premiership games without a win stretching back to October, courtesy of their 3-1 defeat at Aberdeen on Saturday.But, having disposed of Championship side Arbroath 2-0 in the fourth round last month, Spittal is keen to see his side reach the quarter-finals and potentially turn around their season.“Everyone will see the Raith Rovers cup tie as a potential upset in the round,” he said.“It’s important we go there and show character.“I see it as an opportunity to kickstart our season and hopefully pick up points in the league, too.“There’s no getting away from the fact it’s not been good enough but we have an opportunity to give something back and be positive towards the fans.”Midfield ace Spittal is well aware that boss Hammell is under pressure as they try to claw their way away from the bottom end of the table, but has faith.He said: “Obviously results at the moment haven’t been great, but we know we are the only people who can turn it around.

We definitely believe we can.“I’m under no illusions about how bad results have been.“I thought we were competitive in the first half, but gave away a rubbish goal just before half-time.“From then on in we were chasing the game and gave away cheap goals.
