Scheme to help poor Scots buy bikes falls flat with zero takers in three months

A Scottish Government scheme to help people on low incomes buy a bike hasn't handed out a single loan in the three months since its launch.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that despite receiving 290 expressions of interest, there have been no takers for the finance initiative.

The Access to Bike Scheme was launched in September with £390,000 of public money and the intention of providing 500 loans. It was championed by Greens co-leader and Scottish Government's minister for active travel Patrick Harvie.

Cycling UK were lined up to administer it along with several credit union lenders, at cost of nearly £145,000.But the complete lack of interest in the scheme has emerged following the FOI request by the Scottish
