Darren Hayes is opening up about homophobia that he faced in the music industry. The Savage Garden frontman is the voice behind classic, late ’90s hits such as “I Knew I Loved You.” He also launched a solo career after he and former partner Daniel Jones went their separate ways.

Darren added that execs at his label were “obsessed with controlling my image” after he had started coming out.
It is bittersweet for him to see the way that stars are treated today. “I felt a sense of grief because I just thought, ‘Wow, I love how proud, how joyful and how fully formed this generation is,’ and that was not even a possibility for me,” he said. Darren took a different approach on his new album Homosexual, which dropped on Friday. “It took me years, but I was determined to make a record in the vein of the way George Michael made Faith,” he said of the project, which is his first since 2011.
