Mo's Shalimar in Chapel Street will shut its doors for the final time this Sunday, May 2. The store has served the residents of the Islington housing estate since the 1980s.

Owner Mohammed Arshad overcame racism, protection racketeers, arsonists, and robbers to become a local institution and sanctuary for locals.

But as Manchester city centre's astonishing property boom spilled across the River Irwell to inner-city Salford, he says he has lost his business to the unstoppable force of regeneration.
