Motorists have been hit by a New Year blow after a festive shut down on road works came to a premature end. Amey have apologised after traffic management on the A77 at Doonholm Road in Ayr was brought back in earlier than scheduled to accommodate resurfacing at the Bankfield and Holmston Roundabouts.

Originally, road safety improvements to the junctions at Doonholm Road and Corton Road on the A77 were to be paused over Christmas and New Year before restarting on Monday, January 13.

However, commuters found traffic restrictions were back in place on Wednesday, January 8 - five days earlier than planned. Following an enquiry from Ayrshire Live, Amey have now confirmed that the work scheduled was altered to accommodate resurfacing due to take place at the Bankfield and Holmston Roundabouts over the next couple of weeks.Traffic management at Doonholm Road will also be in place from Tuesday, January 14 to Thursday, January 16 while the works at Holmston and Bankfield are completed before returning from Tuesday, January 21 until March.

A spokesperson for Amey, who are carrying out the works on behalf of Transport Scotland, said: "The delivery programme for ongoing safety improvements on the A77 at Doonholm/Corton Road in Ayr has been adjusted to accommodate weekend resurfacing on the A77 at the Holmston and Bankfield Roundabouts.
