Rishi Sunak has announced he would ban new smart motorways from being created, clamp down on rogue parking fines, and review low traffic neighbourhoods to combat what he calls a “war on motorists”.

The Tory leadership contender’s camp described him as the “most pro-driver chancellor in history” as he battles to make up ground on rival Liz Truss.

In his latest bid to gain support from members of the public, Sunak also pledged to transition to electric vehicles without punishing drivers and deliver a “rural rollout action plan” to ensure countryside communities are not left behind.

Mr Sunak said: “The UK is a passionate driving nation because driving provides freedom. We need to stop making life difficult for the vast majority of people across the UK who rely on a car as their primary source of transport to healthcare, employment and other essential day-to-day things.
