Rio Ferdinand has laid out how Steve McClaren’s past experience at Manchester United can help the team climb back to the heights of previous years.

The 61-year-old will relocate back to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s assistant this summer. The ex-England manager was Sir Alex Ferguson’s No.2 from 1999 to 2001, helping the club to win the famous Treble in his debut season.

Ferdinand says those years at United will put this current squad in good stead as ten Hag spies a rebuild. He still understands what the demands are at the club. “It’s like David Moyes comes to Man United. No one on his team knows what it’s like to be at a club of the magnitude of Man United - then you have to react when you get in there when you haven’t got an understanding of being at a big club, the size of that club.” He added: “I think (McClaren) is a good addition.
