Celtic retirement will allow him "time to get on with his real job which is running the SFA". Lawwell announced on Friday morning that he would be standing aside at the end of the season after 17 years at the helm of the club.

He will be replaced by Scottish Rugby's Dominic McKay as the 61-year-old retires from life in Scottish football's fast lane.

Lawwell's influence with the game's power brokers has long been the subject of comment with former St Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour claiming he has "too much power on other clubs".
