A referee has been left with "significant injuries" after being brutally assaulted during an amateur football match in Wigan.

Referee Dave Bradshaw was officiating the fixture between Platt Bridge FC and Wigan Rose when he issued a red card to a Platt Bridge player on Sunday afternoon (October 2).

The player then launched a horrific attack on Bradshaw, Lancs Live reports. It is understood that the match official suffered broken ribs, a concussion, and a broken nose.

Police have launched an investigation into the attack and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
