The Queen's hilarious reaction to an ex prime minister's embarrassing "split-second" decision during a Balmoral picnic left MPs in hysterics on Friday.

Theresa May, 65, had the House of Commons laughing with an anecdote about the mishap as she joined others in paying tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II in parliament on Friday.

She said: "I remember one picnic at Balmoral which was taking place in one of the bothies on the estate. "The hampers came from the castle and we all mucked in to put the food and drink out on the table. "I picked up some cheese, put it on a plate, and was transferring it to the table – the cheese fell on the floor. "I had a split-second decision to make." Theresa continued: "I picked up the cheese, put it on the plate and put it on the table", as laughter ensued. "And I turned around to see that my every move had been watched very carefully by Her Majesty The Queen. "I looked at her, she looked at me, and she just smiled...

And the cheese remained on the table." Theresa also shared insight into her relationship with the sovereign, who died aged 96 on Thursday, and her experience as PM under the Queen's reign.There has been an outpouring of emotional tributes and some funny stories shared as people remember Britain's longest serving monarch, who was known for her "wicked sense of humour".
