The Queen made a surprise appearance at the opening of the new Elizabeth line on Tuesday morning. Her Majesty, 96, looked regal in a yellow coat, matching hat and white gloves as she arrived at the capital's Paddington station to mark the completion of the Crossrail project named in her honour.
With the nation's longest-reigning head having cancelled a slew of events due to ill health recently, her attendance at the transport event was not publicly announced in advance.
A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said on Tuesday morning: "In a happy development, Her Majesty The Queen is attending today's event to mark the completion of the Elizabeth line. “Her Majesty was aware of the engagement, and the organisers were informed of the possibility she may attend.” The Queen was joined by her youngest son, the Earl of Wessex, for the official visit. The mother and son duo were welcomed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Transport for London (TFL) commissioner Andy Byford at Paddington Station. The Queen looked in great spirits as she was spotted smiling while greeting everyone in attendance.
The engagement is the Queen's first outside of the Windsor area since she attended the Prince Philip's memorial service in Westminster Abbey seven weeks earlier.
