In 2007–08, he served for over ten weeks in Helmand, Afghanistan, but was pulled out after an Australian magazine revealed his presence there. He returned to Afghanistan for a 20-week deployment in 2012–13 with the Army Air Corps. He left the army in June 2015.

The usually sharp-tongued Ricky Gervais has taken a cheeky swipe at Prince Harry and Prince William, accusing them of not forking out for tickets to one of his gigs.

Chatting on the Stick to Football podcast, Ricky revealed that he noticed royalty and celebrity heavyweights like Madonna and Paul McCartney enjoying his performance from the back of the Hammersmith Apollo without having paid.

He joked with the hosts, saying, "Once at a gig, I think it was Hammersmith Apollo, at the back was Harry and William, Madonna and Paul McCartney, not one of them paid.

What money have they got between them that lot? Unbelievable." Not only did Ricky dish about high-profile fans attending his shows, but he also opened up about his journey in stand-up following The Office's acclaim, puncturing the belief that fame hit him overnight.
