A pipe which released sewage into the River Irwell during the opening day of fishing season worked ‘as designed’, United Utilities has said.

The water company issued the statement after a video, captured by angler Mike Duddy, was posted on social media showing sewage being ‘spilled’ into the river around ‘100 yards downstream’ of Trinity Way in the city centre.

Mike was on the riverbank on Sunday morning (June 16), the first day of the fishing season, when he saw the spill. “A lot of anglers were on the river from about 5am,” he explained. “It started to rain at 10am for about four or five minutes then all of a sudden that s*** came out the pipe.

Everyone just packed up and went home. It stinks, you can’t enjoy the river like that.” READ MORE: Missing teen Jay Slater was Snapchatting friends before disappearance as mum flies to Tenerife The video was posted online by Prof Jamie Woodward, who called it 'a blight on our great city'.
