Some 42 years later, a TV adaptation feels lost in time, and searching for an argument for its existence. Starring Jon Bernthal and with a pilot written and directed by “Ray Donovan’s” David Hollander (whose ties to Paramount Television Studios were severed during production), “American Gigolo” is lead-footed, and prurient rather than hot. And Bernthal seems at sea here, an unusual look for a star whose coiled charisma has elsewhere served him well. His Julian Kaye — whose name is shared with Richard Gere’s character in Schrader’s movie — emerges from a 15-year sentence we’re told happened about a decade and a half ago, but nothing about Julian’s world feels of the present day, or of Earth. Julian, we understand, was wrongfully convicted; Rosie O’Donnell’s Detective Sunday is attempting to crack the case of what really happenned, while a swirling remembered attraction between Julian and Gretchen Mol’s Michelle threatens Julian’s chances at finding a post-prison equilibrium.

If CBS comedy series How We Roll is renewed for a second season, it will return without executive producer David Hollander. Production on the Pete Holmes sitcom’s freshman season has been completed but if the series gets renewed for Season2, Hollander won’t be involved, the network and How We Roll producer CBS Studios said in a response to an inquiry by Deadline.

Typically, when a show does solid ratings, gets awards consideration, and runs for seven years, a network will give the creator and producers a chance to finish their story before outright canceling it. Unfortunately, that was not the courtesy given to the makers of “Ray Donovan,” as the long-running Showtime series was abruptly canceled after its 7th season, which actually left on a bit of a cliffhanger and zero resolution.

The news was announced today that Ray Donovan will be back with a feature film, and fans can’t hold back their excitement on social media.

Liev Schreiber will reprise his role as the titular hero and will co-write the script with showrunner David Hollander, who will also direct the film. Jon Voight will also return as Mickey Donovan, as well as Kerris Dorsey as Bridget, Ray's daughter.The movie, which could kick off a potential franchise, will continue Ray's journey following the series' seven-season run on Showtime, with «Mickey in the wind and Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage,» according to the official synopsis. It will also «weave together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey's origin story from 30 years ago.»Filming is tentatively slated to begin later this year in New York.

Ray Donovan faced down a lot of enemies over the course of seven seasons, and now the tough-as-nails fixer to the rich and powerful is overcoming his biggest nemesis ever: cancellation.
