Outlander star Sam Heughan looks worlds away from Jamie Fraser in old River City photo

Outlander fans know Sam Heughan for his rugged good looks as he plays Jamie Fraser in the hit show. However a newly resurfaced photo shows the actor almost unrecognisable.

In the throwback snap from 17-years ago the Dumfries born star looks completely different during a photoshoot for his BBC debut in River City.

The 41-year-old hit the big time for his role as the hunky lead in the Outlander series, but the actor looked very different when he first hit television screens in 2005.The photo was used for Sam's acting debut in River City as he landed on the streets of Shieldinch and played footballer Andrew Murray.His storyline explored a love story with his on-screen girlfriend and Glaswegian local Kelly-Marie Adams (played by Carmen Pieraccini).Andrew was the favoured footballer and as his parent’s golden boy his dreams were realised when he became the star of the Scottish Premier League.Fans of the series watched as he got lost in the fame, money and women - however, he fell for Kelly-Marie.Born into a rich and arrogant family, his family believed his attraction to Kelly-Marie was a form of rebellion as they considered her too common.However, the two married and he whisked her away to Monaco to live out her dream of being a WAG to its fullest potential.However, the high-profile success soon got to him and Andrew couldn’t stop cheating on Kelly-Marie, which forced her to return to Shieldinch.Eventually, Andrew gave his wife an ultimatum, and she chose to stay in Scotland which bruised his ego.In retaliation, he immediately got engaged and then sold his story to the papers.This is a stark difference from Sam’s current role in the historical drama which was set in 1776.As well as a successful career on-screen starring in
