Newmains duo had taken club 'as far as we could' - but will help find replacements

Newmains United co-bosses Paul Davies and Craig Gupwell stepped down on Saturday following a 2-1 West of Scotland League defeat at home to Kello Rovers - but will help find their own replacement.Davies admitted that the Conference C defeat was the last straw for the duo, and they had been thinking about quitting for some time.But they will stay on to help the committee find new bosses and will appoint an interim management team in the coming days.Newmains have invited applications and, with no game at the weekend, have set the closing date of Sunday, January 23.Davies says he and Gupwell intend to return to football as soon as possible, but only if the right opportunity comes along, and they will make sure Newmains are sorted out first.

He and Gupwell took charge three years ago when Newmains United merged with amateurs Carluke FC, and Davies told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "This is something we had been thinking about for a long time - we've taken the club as far as we believe we can. "This has been in the back of our thoughts for a wee while, and last night we decided that with the remaining games it would give us a great opportunity to find somebody to come in."We're going to help them in that process as well, not leave the club in the lurch, and make sure the club is being put in the right hands."We've had a lot of interest in the job already, so we've put a closing date of next Sunday and it will allow the committee to make their decision on who they want."It's probably a slightly different job from most managerial jobs, because you're going in and taking over a club, overseeing the club from top to bottom, rather than first-team managing."We will help out, to make sure the club is in safe hands, and in the next
