Neighbour tells of moment bomb squad detonated grenade on Ayrshire street

A neighbour has told how an Ayrshire street emptied in minutes after a grenade was discovered inside a shed.Lindsay Wood, 42, was evacuated from her home along with hundreds of neighbours on Troon’s Burnfoot Avenue last Thursday.The mum-of-two has told how scores of police swarmed on the street sparking panic.Elderly residents from a sheltered housing complex were among those who were told to leave the vicinity as the bomb squad rushed to scene.Lindsay told Ayrshire Live: “I live on the same street.“We were all evacuated just before 7pm, we were let back in around 11pm.“When I looked out my window I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

There couldn’t have been a police officer left in Ayrshire, they were all in my street.“They must have cordoned off about 50 houses.

The cordon went from just pass my neighbours house to the flats across the road, and the wee side street behind the flats. “All they could tell us was they had found a suspicious package and that we needed to get out.” It is understood that the grenade was found in a garden shed during a ‘spring clean’ with officers instantly taking action to place the area next to Barassie beach into lockdown.A bomb disposal bot was issued and was sent through a close towards the ex-military device.Lindsay has told how neighbours could hear a “loud bang” as the device was safely destroyed.But the event was all too much for her 10-year-old son.Lindsay added: “My son was really frightened at first, he was worried it was a bomb. “When they detonated the device it was quite a loud bang that went off.”Some residents were taken into the Walker Hall in Troon for shelter whilst the Explosive Ordnance Disposal dealt with the threat.Ayrshire Live told how cops returned to the street on
