For the first two years of her life, Ruby Pollard was a perfectly healthy little girl. She could crawl, use her hands and say words like ‘mama’ and ‘papa’.
Overnight, the milestones she had reached were suddenly gone. Ruby could no longer babble, crawl or sit up by herself. Her mum, Sandra Gamble, knew something wasn’t right.
It took years for the mum-of-two to discover what was wrong with her baby. Health visitors initially thought Ruby had autism, but the reality was something far worse.
Ruby had Rett syndrome. Rett syndrome is a rare disorder which causes severe mental and physical disability. The condition is estimated to affect about one in 12,000 girls born each year and is only rarely seen in boys.
