New graves have been dug in Manchester’s Southern Cemetery in case workers need to self-isolate with coronavirus symptoms. But the city council has insisted that they are not being earmarked specifically for victims of the disease.
Mounds of earth have appeared next to at least 16 open graves - some already occupied - in the eastern part of the cemetery off Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton.
Images of the new graves have circulated on social media, with Hulme councillor Lee-Ann Igbon posting on Twitter: “Haunting reality 16 graves ready at southern cemetry [sic].
