Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen has waded in on the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer debate. United have sacked Solskjaer after Saturday's 4-1 defeat to Watford.

The Norwegian's final game was the latest in a string of poor results that included 5-0 and 2-0 home defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City.

He leaves with the club thanking him for his efforts in a statement that also made clear that his reputation as a legend at Old Trafford for his achievements as a player has not been eroded.

Michael Carrick is set to take over immediately with an interim manager set to be appointed to see out the end of the season.
