Met Police 'understand public concern' as 52 people arrested during Coronation celebrations

The Metropolitan Police said it ‘understands public concern’ after 52 people were arrested in London throughout the King’s coronation day.

The police force came under heavy criticism on Saturday after campaign groups described “incredibly alarming” detentions during republican protests.

Protesters from the anti-monarchy group, including its chief executive Graham Smith, were apprehended during the day – as well as demonstrators from Just Stop Oil and Animal Rising. Another person was arrested for the possession of drugs and a knife. Fourteen people were arrested in east London on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance.
