A warning over possible travel disruption with parts of Greater Manchester set to be battered by heavy rain. The several days of wet and miserable conditions are set to continue with more heavy downpours forecast today (Thursday).
A Met Office yellow warning for rain came into force at midnight, and will remain in place for the rest of the day. It covers several areas on the eastern edge of the region including Oldham, Rochdale, Tameside, and parts of Stockport.\ The forecaster says: "A period of heavy and persistent rain is expected to affect parts of northern England and north Midlands during much of Thursday. READ MORE: Manchester Piccadilly and other UK stations targeted with terrorism message in Wi-Fi 'cyber security incident' "The heaviest rainfall is likely to be across the Pennines and North York Moors where 80-100 mm of rainfall could accumulate during the course of the day.
Elsewhere, totals are likely to be lower, reaching 20-30 mm widely but with a risk of 50-70 mm in some locations." They say that spray and surface water flooding could make driving conditions difficult.
There is also a "slight chance" of cancellations or delays to train and bus services and a "small chance" of flooding and power cuts in some areas, they add.
