The "near catastrophic car chase" involving paparazzi and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in New York could have been "extremely dangerous", according to the city's mayor.
Eric Adams spoke out on Wednesday to condemn the photographers involved in the pursuit on Tuesday, 16 May. He also referred to the paparazzi chase that saw the death of Harry's mother, Princess Diana, in Paris in 1997.The mayor called the New York paparazzi “reckless and irresponsible”, saying that New York City was different to a small town. "You shouldn't be speeding anywhere," he said, "but this is a densely populated city." He added that it would be “horrific” for Harry to be involved in an accident similar to the one that killed the Princess of Wales.
Diana was killed in a crash after her car, driven at speed by a drunk chauffeur, was chased through the streets of Paris by paparazzi photographers.
Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle – accompanied by Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland – had been at the Ms Foundation for Women’s 50th anniversary gala event in the US city, which honoured “game-changing” grantee partners and visionary leaders committed to the organisation’s mission.
