In contrast, there were only 362 confirmed measles infections last year. The number of confirmed cases was significantly lower in 2022 and 2021, with 53 and two cases respectively, although the latter occurred during pandemic restrictions.
So far in 2024, England has seen 2,707 confirmed cases of measles, including one death of a young person other known health conditions.
Three out of five cases (61%, or 1,656 infections) have been in children aged 10 and under. Data from the UK Health Security Agency reveals that this is the largest measles outbreak in England since records began in 1996.
