The £3.9m project, the first elevated 'helipad' of its kind in the region, is off the ground after years of fundraising and planning by hospital charity chiefs.

The Manchester Evening News was given prior access to the stunning rooftop structure - and a series of training exercises. The helipad at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is on the roof of the Grafton Street car park at the trust's Oxford Road campus.
