Jorge Mendes wanted his client Joao Felix to join Manchester City prior to his move to Atletico Madrid, supposed leaked audio suggests.

Rivals Manchester United had reportedly registered an interest in Felix last month albeit inquiries went nowhere. The 22-year-old sealed a £115m move to Atletico from Benfica in 2019, going on to lift the La Liga title last season.

But during the summer of his move, it seems Mendes had preferred his player to secure a move to City instead. Portuguese news outlet Record has leaked audio of a conversation that took place, it claims, between Mendes and Bruno Maruta, the youth sporting director at Benfica.

As transcribed by the Metro, the former is reported to have said: “(then-Benfica president Luis Felipe) Vieira insisted that I bring him proposals of €120million (for Felix) and I already have four. “Now there is a problem because he can only go to one and there is one that gives €120m (Atletico Madrid) and another that lets him stay one more year. “The best thing for Joao Felix would be Guardiola’s Manchester City.” Felix may not be top of City’s wish list this summer with an established striker deemed the priority and the youngster failing to become a staple in the Atletico line-up.
