Major new Highway code changes that will impact every driver next week - full list

There are some rule changes coming into force this year that could alter the way you use the roads. Updates to the Highway Code will alter the hierarchy or road users and will come into force from January 29 this year.

The Department of Transport stated that the changes are set to improve safety levels for all road users and in particular pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

In total, there are three new Highway Code rule changes that will impact you. Here are all the details. Possibly the most important change will see the Highway Code's hierarchy of road users altered.

The list goes from most likely to be harmed to most likely to cause harm - which means the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger posed to other road users.Using this logic, pedestrians top the list with large and heavy goods vehicles in last position.The road user hierarchy will now look like this:As the list suggests, cyclists and horse rides will be required to reduce danger of pedestrians on the roads as those out walking as considered the most at risk.However, the update emphasises that all road users have a responsibility to to consider the safety of everyone on the road.According to the Government's Department of Transport, the system will pave the way for a ‘more mutually respectful and considerate culture of safe and effective road use’.The rule change is aimed at drivers and motorists as well as horse riders and cyclists.Following the change, the Highway Code now clearly states that you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross when sitting at a junction reading to turn.Previous to this, vehicles had priority meaning that those out walking were required to wait until the road was clear and safe to cross.Drivers are
