Focus Features has the right idea in releasing the new sequel, Book Club: The Next Chapter just in time for Mother’s Day. Reuniting four genuine movie icons – Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen – whose first film in this senior franchise, 2017’s Book Club, was a surprise hit making over $100 million worldwide, there was proof positive that older female audience was eager for a night or matinee out at the multiplex if the idea and cast were right. Since then the pandemic hit and changed moviegoing habits for the older crowd, a group that is hard to get back into theatres (although not impossible – witness The Lost City and Ticket To Paradise). My guess is that with this quartet back in fine form, and now all over 70 (!), this could again play with the usual Hollywood conceit that women of a certain age are not boxoffice. Throw in Italy as their destination and you have an early summer confection that could prove to be irresistible for a too-often ignored demographic.

During the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, Jennifer Coolidge was honored with the Comedic Genius Award, becoming only the sixth person to receive the coveted honor, which recognizes “actors who have made incomparable contributions to the world of comedy, providing a major influence through their work and transforming the genre at-large.”

If the opening sequence of Bill Holderman’s “Book Club: The Next Chapter” is any indication we might have officially turned the page on psychological “lockdown despair” narratives and entered the (somewhat cringey) era of lighthearted “lockdown nostalgia.” That’s what the leading ladies of 2018’s lovely, if not a tad underwhelming, friendship comedy “Book Club” signal in the sequel’s opening moments, reuniting for a similarly boozy and moderately engaging adventure soaked in deep Italian reds, but not enough laughs.It’s probably easy to feel a little nostalgic for the days of lockdown. Halcyon days for those who were financially privileged, healthy and could afford to take up new interests during that low-key downtime, like pickling, playing the accordion or caring for a new pet parrot.

Some, such as Viggo Mortensen, said, “It’s about exclusion, which is discrimination.”

After weeks of amping up the crowd for a Take That reunion at Sunday’s historic Coronation concert, viewers were left feeling less than impressed when former band member Jason Orange was ‘replaced’ by a Britain's Got Talent star. Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle featured an array of celebrities, including Top Gun star Tom Cruise, who paid a special tribute to the King.  The actor’s heartfelt message was delivered from the cockpit of his Top Gun Warbird plane, saying: "Pilot to pilot. Your Majesty, you can be my wingman any time," before saluting and flying off.

Taking to Instagram on Saturday, the I Wanna Love You Forever singer posted an emotional message in which she offered details of her and her husband Eric Johnson's daughter Maxwell's 11th birthday on 1 May. King Charles III and Queen Camilla received a royal welcome to the throne with a star-studded lineup at their coronation concert. Lionel Richie and Katy Perry closed out the show for 20,000 guests at Windsor Castle, where Tom Cruise dropped in with a special video message for the official new king. Sitting in the cockpit of his own jet while flying through the clouds, Cruise paid homage to his iconic "Top Gun" character as he congratulated King Charles III.

McKinley Franklin editor The MTV Movie & TV Awards faced a series of roadblocks this year due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. While the awards show was set to broadcast live on Sunday, it was announced that due to the strike, the network would air a pre-taped special as several attendees announced they were pulling out of the show.  “As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peaks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year,” said Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount Global, and an executive producer of the MTV Movie & TV Awards, in a statement.
